Brazil has 20.4 million workers who could work remotely, says Ipea

Brazil has about 20.4 million workers in occupations that could be carried out remotely, calculated the Institute of Applied Economic Research (IPEA) in a study released this Friday (27).

This share is equivalent to 24.1% of the total employed in the Brazilian labor market, although it concentrates around 40% of the total wage income.

In other words, the remaining 75.9% of the remaining workers, 64.449 million people, generated 60% of the country’s wage bill, but with no chance of remote work.

The survey is based on data from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Pnad Contínua) for the first quarter of 2021 and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, from the National Accounts, both calculated by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). ).

According to Ipea, occupations with potential for remote work showed a predominance of women (58.3%), white people (60%), with a complete higher education (62.6%) and aged between 20 and 49 years ( 71.8%).

Most potential telecommuters are located in the Southeast region, 10.465 million of the vacancies mapped, equivalent to 27.7% of those employed in the region.

The South had 3.566 million workers with the potential to work remotely, 25.7% of those employed in the local labor market, and the Center-West had another 1.705 million vacancies with potential for remote work, 23.5% of those employed in the region.

The North region concentrated only 1.208 million vacancies with potential for remote work (17.4% of all occupations in the region), while the Northeast had 3.519 million people employed with teleworking potential, a share of 18.5% of those employed. on site.

“The estimates indicated the predominance, as expected, of teleworking in urban areas. Nevertheless, the rural area has more than 650 thousand people in potential teleworking, which corresponds to 6.4% of the total employed (in rural areas)”, pointed out the Letter of Conjuncture published by IPEA.

The Southeast concentrated the largest mass of effective income of people in potential telecommuting, with R$ 50.4 billion, followed by the South (R$ 14.7 billion) and Northeast (R$ 11 billion).

The State of São Paulo had 47.6% of the total effective income generated by people in potential telecommuting.
