Brazil has a drop in elderly deaths 80 and over 2023, says IBGE

The number of deaths among elderly from over 80 years decreased 7.9% in 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Civil registry statistics data were released on Friday (16).

In the period, Brazil recorded 38,035 deaths less than in 2022.

The group of elderly characterized by people 60 or older represented 71% of the recorded deaths, which is equivalent to 1.01 million deaths. Compared to the year 2022, there was a drop of 5.7% (61,272 fewer deaths).

Information from the Ministry of Health’s Mortality Information System indicates that much of the reduction in the number of deaths is related to the end of the pandemic. Also according to the system, in 2023 there was a drop of 55.7 thousand deaths classified in the category “Diseases by Nais-Specified Location Viruses”, related to COVID-19.

The largest reduction was observed in the South (8%) and Northeast (5.3%). The region that presented the lowest fall was to the north of 2.3%.

Regarding sex, 783 thousand male and 646 thousand female deaths were recorded. Deaths between men had a 4.9%reduction, while among women the fall was 5.2%.
