Brazil has a drop in hospitalizations for respiratory syncytial virus, points out Fiocruz

Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARI) associated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Brazil are falling. The data are from the new edition of the Infogripe bulletin, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) released this Thursday (26).

According to the survey, the Federal District is an exception, still presenting a downward reversal. The data refer to the period from January 15 to 21, based on data entered in the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information System (Sivep-Flu) up to January 23.

Researcher Marcelo Gomes, coordinator of Infogripe, points out that maintaining a high level in the DF requires attention. “Growth has stopped, but there is still a relatively constant volume of weekly hospitalizations”, he points out.

Among children aged 0 to 4 years, VSR also maintains a significant presence in Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, São Paulo and in the three states of the southern region. However, unlike what is observed in the DF, in these states there has been a decline in recent weeks.

Covid-19

The study indicates that the Covid-19-associated surge seen in late 2022 has stopped. Virtually all states have a drop scenario for coronavirus infections.

“Most of the country is returning to significantly low Covid-19 levels compared to history. Fortunately, there is no sign of growth resuming at the beginning of the year”, completes Gomes.

The bulletin shows SRAG declines in both the long (last six weeks) and short term (last three weeks) trends. The data show maintenance of the prevalence of Sars-CoV-2 (Covid-19) in all age groups from 5 years old, with greater emphasis on the adult population.

deaths

The most recent daily epidemiological analysis of Covid-19 carried out by the Ministry of Health reveals that eight Brazilian states still present a scenario of increased variation in deaths from the disease. They are: Pará, Amapá, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Tocantins, Goiás, São Paulo and Santa Catarina. The data are compiled by the folder from the notifications of the state health departments.

Another 12 states show a reduction in the variation of deaths. They are: Piauí, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Espírito Santo, Rio Grande do Sul, Mato Grosso, Alagoas, Maranhão, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rondônia.

Faced with this scenario, the Ministry of Health reinforces the call for the population to seek health posts to complement immunization against Covid-19. Vaccination is the most effective way to bring down the rates of serious cases and deaths from the disease.

“The Covid-19 vaccine will be on the regular national immunization schedule, but we have the great task of recovering the high vaccination coverage in Brazil. Our focus is also on vaccinating children”, highlights the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade.
