Brazil has almost 11 million young people in extreme poverty, says Abrinq

A survey carried out by Fundação Abrinq pointed out that almost 11 million children and adolescents in Brazil are in extreme poverty.

The 2023 edition of the Scenario of Childhood and Adolescence in Brazil, which compiles data from 2021, showed that young people between 0 and 14 years old in this situation live on 11 reais a day.

The 10.6 million in poverty represent a significant increase of 38% compared to 2020, when there were 7.7 million children and adolescents.

A CNN Radio the executive manager of Abrinq Victor Graça said that 10 years ago the foundation launched the publication, using public data from the IBGE and PNAD, for example.

“The causes for the significant increase in poverty are unemployment, which directly affects children, living on 11 reais a day is practically impossible.”

According to him, the Covid-19 pandemic had an “immense impact” on maternal mortality, which increased by almost 100% between 2019 and 2021.

Even in the face of this situation, Victor Graça believes that the solution exists.

“We have income transfers, increased economic activity and employment, which help to get out of poverty”, he said.

While this combination does not happen, he defends the need for “public policies to mitigate child poverty and malnutrition.”

The most important thing, for him, is that Brazil “must have a pact for education, with very strong investment over 15, 20 years and that will have a transforming effect in the future”.
