Brazil has almost five million more women than men, says IBGE

The Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continuous), released this Friday (22), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), shows that, in 2021, 51.1% of the Brazilian population was female. . The data represents 4.8 million more women than men in the country.

The work points to the existence of 108.7 million women and 103.9 million men, in a population contingent of 212.6 million people. Female participation in the population has been higher than that of males since the beginning of the historical series, in 2012.

According to the IBGE, there are 95.6 men for every 100 women in Brazil. A logic that is reproduced in almost all regions of the country. Only in the North is the logic different: there are 102.3 men for every 100 women.

The survey pointed out that, between 2012 and 2021, there was a reduction in the percentages of women and men in all age groups up to 34 years old. In the age groups above 34 years old, there was growth for both men and women. The survey also showed that the male population has a younger pattern.

“In the age groups from 0 to 4 years old and from 5 to 9 years old, a higher sex ratio (male population in relation to the female population) is observed when compared to the other age groups, being, respectively, 104.8 and 104. .7 men for every 100 women in these groups,” reads an excerpt from the research report.

However, the agency points out that, as the mortality of men is higher in each of the age groups, the sex ratio tends to reduce with increasing age.

“In the 25-29 age group, the contingent of men and women was similar, each corresponding to 4.0% of the total population. From the age of 30 onwards, the percentage of women was higher than that of men in all age groups, with a proportion of 26.6% and 29.5%, respectively, of men and women”, explains the research.

Among the elderly, there is also a higher concentration of women. According to the IBGE, the sex ratio calculated for people aged 60 and over is approximately 78.8 men for every 100 women. In relation to the population aged 70 and over, the ratio is even lower. There are 71.8 men for every 100 women.

According to the institute, the explanation for the phenomenon is the fact that life expectancy among women is higher.
