The knife attack at a state school in São Paulo, this Monday (27), in which a 71-year-old teacher was killed, marks at least the 16th case in Brazilian schools in the last 20 years.
According to a survey carried out by the Sou da Paz Institute at the end of November last year, since 2003 Brazil has registered 11 episodes of attacks with firearms in Brazilian schools.
In addition CNN raised at least five episodes of violence in the school environment – including this Monday – also using other types of weapons, such as knives.

São Paulo/SP – March 2023
A teacher died, this Monday morning (27), after being stabbed by a student at a state school in the west zone of São Paulo.
The victim was Elisabete Tenreiro, 71 years old. According to São Paulo Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite, three other teachers and two students were victims of this episode.
“We have four teachers and two students who are victims; of the four teachers, Elizabeth sadly passed away. We have three teachers, one who suffered some blows, but is stable, and the other two superficial. Of the two students, one stable, already treated, and another boy in a state of shock”, said Derrite.
Ipaussu/SP – December 2022
On the night of December 14, a 22-year-old young man invaded a school in the interior of Ipaussu (SP) after stabbing two people and taking another hostage. As detailed in the Police Report, the motivation for the crime was revenge against the school principal, with whom the perpetrator had had problems ten years ago.
The Public Security Secretariat of São Paulo reported that the stabbing victims were two teachers, one aged 26 and the other aged 43. The violence occurred around 8 pm, when the man armed with a knife jumped over the school wall looking for the principal.
When he couldn’t find her, the author of the crime injured the two teachers in different parts of the body, such as the arm and abdomen. According to the Department of Education of the State of São Paulo (Seduc-SP), the affected servants were rescued by the school team and sent to hospitals in the region.
Aracruz/ES – November 2022
Two schools in the city of Aracruz, in Espírito Santo, suffered attacks with firearms on Friday, November 25 last year. Four people died and 10 were injured, according to the city hall. The Civil Police, the Military Police, the Fire Department and other bodies work to assist the victims.
The city of Aracruz confirmed the attack on two educational institutions, the State Elementary and Middle School (EEFM) Primo Bitti and the private school Centro Educacional Praia de Coqueiral (CEPC), both in the Coqueiral neighborhood.
According to the state Department of Public Security, the gunman managed to enter the first school, EEFM Primo Bitti, after breaking the lock on the gate. He opened fire in the staff room, leaving two teachers dead and nine injured.
The shooter proceeded to the second school by car, where he killed a 12-year-old child, and left two people injured, with no information on their ages.
In a press conference, Governor Renato Casagrande said that the author of the attacks confessed to committing the crime in conversation with his parents and the police. He did not speak about his motivation, but said he had planned the attack for about two years.
Sobral/CE – May 2022
A 15 year old student shot in three students from a public school in Sobral, in the Ceará on October 5, 2022.
The firearm used was registered in the name of a CAC (collector, sport shooter and hunter), which, according to the state Secretariat for Public Security and Social Defense (SSPDS), supposedly belongs to a family member of the young man.
According to the Sobral Municipal Police Station, the student confessed during his testimony that he had premeditated the act after being a victim of bullying. The crime took place at the Professora Carmosina Ferreira Gomes Full-Time High School, in the Sumaré neighborhood.
The three victims hit by the shots were taken to the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Sobral. One of them couldn’t resist the injuries and died. The others were discharged from the hospital.
São Paulo/SP – March 2022
A 12-year-old student was stabbed by a classmate at Colégio Floresta, east of São Paulo, on March 22, 2022. An 11-year-old classmate who tried to protect her was also injured.
The assailant was another student, aged 13, and, according to police, said he was bullied.
The student was stabbed at least 10 times with a knife and had a punctured lung, but survived. The 11-year-old boy had minor injuries.
Morro do Chapéu/BA – September 2022
A 13-year-old teenager attacked the Yeda Barradas Carneiro Municipal School, where he studies, in the city of Morro do Chapéu, in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia.
On the morning of September 27 last year, he set fire to the school and injured the principal with a knife. The young man was apprehended by the Military Police and was charged with an offense similar to the crime of minor bodily injury.
According to information from the Bahian Civil Police, the student entered the school and threw Molotov cocktail-type homemade explosives, which caused the flames. Then he would have stabbed the coordinator. No one was injured in contact with the fire and the victim was sent for a medical examination.
Barreiras/BA – September 2022
An armed student entered the Eurides Sant’Anna Municipal School on September 26 and shot at two students in the city of Barreiras, in the interior of Bahia. A 20-year-old student in a wheelchair died during the attack. There is no information about the motive for the crime.
Saudades/SC – May 2021
An 18-year-old youth invaded a primary school in the municipality of Saudades, in western Santa Catarina state, on May 4, 2021.
He killed three children and two teachers. According to information from the Civil Police, he carried a machete and struck students and teachers upon entering the premises.
Three other children and an employee were also injured and were taken to the hospital in Saudades.
Caraí/MG – July 2019
On November 7, 2019, a 17-year-old student invaded a classroom at the Orlando TAvares State School in the municipality of Caraí, Minas Gerais. He fired and wounded two students.
Suzano/SP – March 2019
An attack on the Raul Brasil State School, in Suzano, in Greater São Paulo, left ten dead, including the two shooters, and 11 injured.
The perpetrators of the massacre, Luiz Henrique de Castro, aged 25, and GTM, aged 17, were former students of the institution.
One of the shooters ended up killing the accomplice and then committed suicide.
Medianeira/PR – September 2018
A 15-year-old high school student took a gun and shot at classmates at a state school in the sleepy town of Medianeira, 60 kilometers from Foz do Iguaçu, in western Paraná.
He had a list to get his friends off – in the end, two were shot. The attack took place at Colégio Estadual João Manoel Mondrone. According to police, the author of the attack would be the target of bullying at school.
Goiânia/GO – October 2017
A 14-year-old teenager shot dead two classmates and injured four others in a classroom at Colégio Goyases, in Goiânia on October 20, 2017.
Son of military police, he used his mother’s gun, which he had taken to private school hidden in his backpack. According to the Civil Police, the boy was bullied and the crime was premeditated.
Santa Rita/PB – April 2012
Two young people arrived at the Enéas Carvalho State School, in Santa Rita (Metropolitan Region of João Pessoa), on a motorcycle and invaded the courtyard.
They wore school uniform. One of them shot a 15-year-old boy. The gunman fired another five times, hitting two girls.
One of them, aged 17, was shot in the right arm. The other was shot in the left foot. According to the police, the motive for the crime would have been jealousy.
São Caetano do Sul/SP – September 2011
A 10-year-old student shot the teacher and then killed himself at the Alcina Dantas Feijão Municipal School, in São Caetano do Sul, in the ABC region of São Paulo.
He used a gun from his father, a municipal civil guard. According to colleagues and school officials heard at the time, the boy was very studious, intelligent and calm.
Rio de Janeiro/RJ (Realengo) – April 2011
Considered at the time as the biggest massacre in Brazilian schools until then, the tragedy in Realengo, west of Rio de Janeiro, left 12 children dead.
The crime was committed by a 23-year-old former student who took two revolvers to the Tasso da Silveira Municipal School and shot at the students, all aged between 13 and 15.
After breaking into two classrooms, he was hit in the stomach by police and shot himself in the head.
Taíuva/SP – January 2003
On January 27, an 18-year-old student fired 15 shots at around 50 students in the courtyard of the Coronel Benedito Ortiz State School, in Taiúva, in the interior of the state. 38 caliber revolver to shoot himself in the head and died. The episode left no fatal victims besides the boy.
