Brazil has had at least 22 violent attacks on schools since 2002, study finds

A study reveals that, since 2002, Brazil has registered 22 attacks of “extreme violence” in schools, including the attack this Wednesday (27), at a state teaching institution in São Paulo. A teacher was stabbed and died after a cardiac arrest.

Coordinated by Telma Vinha and Cleo Garcia, the survey reveals that there were 36 fatal victims, including students, teachers, education professionals and shooters. Plans that were disrupted before they happened or those that occurred at the time of a fight (not planned) are not included.

Of 23 attacks, 7 occurred in the second half of 2022, and 3 in 2023. The youngest of the attackers was 10 years old, and the oldest 25 years old. There were 16 students and 12 former students who carried out the attacks – in 3 cases, they acted in pairs.

The research also shows that firearms were used in 12 attacks. In 6, the shooters had the gun at home; in 4, they bought from third parties; and in 2, the artifacts are of unknown origin.

The targets were 12 state schools, 6 municipal schools, 1 civic military municipal and 4 private schools.

A CNN Telma Vinha, doctor in education, professor at Unicamp and one of the researchers responsible for the study, said that a combination of factors is driving the increase in incidents of this type.

Among them, easy access to hate speech propagated on the internet, facilitating access to firearms and suffering within the school.

“We have a radicalization of youth. They are increasingly frequenting extremist forums, where they are radicalized. The sum of radicalization, increasingly easier access to the internet, learning how to carry out these attacks, plus suffering at school and other factors, forms a cauldron, a situation that facilitates these attacks to occur”, said the doctor in education .

Stabbing in Sao Paulo

The 71-year-old daughter of teacher Elisabeth Tenreiro, who died this Wednesday (27) after being stabbed in an attack on a state school in São Paulo, spoke about the affection she received from students.

“My brother-in-law, who took her to class every day, said that when she arrived at the school, the students even came and hugged her, she was very much loved at this school, it was an impressive thing. (sic)“, said.

Also according to her daughter, Elisabeth started teaching at the Thomazia Montoro State School, where the attack took place this year.

“She was a very dear teacher wherever she went. The students even sent her a message when they had some achievement ‘look, teacher Beth, thanks to you, who made me think, made me reflect on my trajectory, on my path, in seeking opportunities’”, she says.

A CNN had access to an incident report registered on February 28 by the José Roberto Pacheco State School, in Taboão da Serra, in Greater São Paulo, in the 1st Police District (DP) of the city, which shows that the student in question had already threat of attack against the educational institution.

In the document, it is written that the young man was “presenting suspicious behavior on social networks, posting compromising videos, such as, for example, carrying a firearm, simulating violent attacks”.

Student planned shooting attack

São Paulo Public Security Secretary Guilherme Derrite said in a press conference that the student was planning an attack with a firearm.

According to the Secretary of Education, Renato Feder, the aggressor had problems with violence at another school, in addition to having uttered racist insults against colleagues from Thomazia Montoro.

Feder announced the expansion of the Conviva program – responsible for offering emotional support to students -, which will now have 5,000 professionals (currently 500), distributed throughout the state. In addition, in-person psychological calls will be resumed in schools.
