On August 10, Brazil surpassed the mark of 2,000 Brazilians considered super-intelligent – people with IQs far above average – on August 10, the date on which the World Gifted Day is celebrated.
The state of São Paulo leads the ranking, with 984 superintelligents. Next are Rio de Janeiro, with 229 people, the Federal District, with 135, Paraná, with 134, and Minas Gerais, with 131.
Worldwide, there are more than 150,000 people identified as super-intelligent in 90 countries on five continents. In South America, Brazil is the country with the highest number of registrations; in the global scope, it occupies the 30th position, with the United States, United Kingdom and Germany at the top of the list, respectively.
The mapping is done by Associação Mensa Brasil, the official Brazilian affiliate of Mensa International, the largest and oldest high intelligence quotient (IQ) organization in the world.
According to the survey, 163 super-intelligent Brazilians were admitted by the institution before reaching 18 years of age. The first child joined the entity in September 2006, when he was 9 years old.
In September 2011, an even younger member, 7 years old, joined the association. Currently, there are also 56 children under the age of 18 associated with the entity.
Currently, of the total number of people with IQs well above the average identified in Brazil, 70% are between 19 and 36 years old. People between 13 and 18 years old correspond to 10%, the same level verified for the age group between 37 and 45 years old. Only 5% are over 45 years of age, and the oldest member was identified at 72 years of age.
According to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, created by psychologist David Wechsler and used by institutions such as Mensa, the intelligence quotient rating is as follows:
– above 130: gifted
– 120 – 129: superior intelligence
– 110 – 119: above average intelligence
– 90 – 109: average intelligence
– 80 – 89: slight dullness
– 66 – 79: borderline
– 51 – 65: slight weakness
– 36 – 50: moderate debility
– 20 – 35: severe debility
– below 20: profound weakness
With the aim of expanding the discovery of gifted people, Mensa reported that it has periodically carried out rounds of tests in several Brazilian cities.
The last round took place on July 30, in 13 cities in nine different Brazilian states, simultaneously. The next round should take place at the end of September.
“We have one of the largest populations on the planet. About 2% of the inhabitants of Brazil can show signs of high abilities, with an IQ well above average. However, there is still no comprehensive mapping of these individuals”, points out Rodrigo Lopes Sauaia, president of Mensa Brasil.
