Brazil has second death from monkeypox; victim was hospitalized in RJ

The State Department of Health of Rio de Janeiro (SES-RJ) confirmed this Monday (29) the first death from monkeypox in the state. The patient, a 33-year-old man, was hospitalized at Hospital Ferreira Machado, in Campos dos Goytacazes, in the north of Rio de Janeiro. It is the second death from the disease in the country.

According to the Municipal Health Department, he had low immunity and comorbidities, which worsened the disease. The patient had complications and needed to be transferred to the ICU on the 19th of this month. Death happened on Monday morning.

The city’s Health Department is monitoring people who have had contact with the patient. According to monitoring, none showed signs and symptoms of infection by the virus until this Monday.

Rio State has 611 confirmed cases of monkeypox and 61 probable cases have been recorded. Another 474 suspected cases are still under investigation and 751 have been discarded.

Since the first suspected case registered in the state, the SES Strategic Health Surveillance Information Center has been monitoring cases daily, in partnership with the reference laboratories of Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) and UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro). Janeiro) and the municipal health departments.

Suspected cases are those in which patients of any age present with sudden onset of mucosal damage and/or an acute rash suggestive of single or multiple monkeypox anywhere on the body. They may also have swelling in the genitals, which may be associated with other signs and symptoms.

Probable cases are those in which the patient has one or more of the criteria listed as close and prolonged exposure, no respiratory protection, or direct physical contact with multiple and/or unknown partners in the 21 days prior to the onset of signs; contact with contaminated materials such as bedding and bath linen or personal items from a probable or confirmed case of Monkeypox and healthcare workers not properly wearing personal protective equipment who have had contact with a probable or confirmed case of Monkeypox in the 21 days prior to onset of signs and symptoms.

Importantly, although the disease was first identified in monkeys, the current outbreak is not related to these animals.

First death

the first death by monkey pox in Brazil took place in Belo Horizonte exactly one month ago. A 41-year-old man also had low immunity and comorbidities. He was being treated for lymphoma, cancer of the lymphatic system, which led to clinical worsening.

Brazil records 4,472 confirmed cases of monkey pox — or monkeypox, according to the Ministry of Health.

So far, infections have been confirmed in the states of São Paulo (2,788), Rio de Janeiro (578), Minas Gerais (253), Federal District (168), Goiás (189), Bahia (44), Ceará (47), Rio Grande do Norte (18), Espírito Santo (11), Pernambuco (24), Tocantins (2), Amazonas (19), Acre (1), Rio Grande do Sul (77), Mato Grosso do Sul (16), Mato Grosso (20), Santa Catarina (78), Paraná (118), Pará (12), Tocantins (2), Alagoas (2), Maranhão (2), Paraíba (1), Piauí (3) and Roraima (1) ).
