Brazil holds unprecedented murder trial in the United States

This Thursday (10), at the Criminal Forum of Vitória, in Espírito Santo, the trial of two capixabas began. Thiago Philipe Souza Bragança and Walderson Junior da Silva killed Ana Paula Feitosa from Minas Gerais in January 2020 in the United States.

The case is unprecedented because the murder took place in the USA, where the two were arrested, while the trial is being held in Brazil.

Two US police officers are among the witnesses at the trial and must explain how the crime took place, in an unprecedented partnership between the Brazilian and US governments. The two asphyxiated the 24-year-old on January 30, 2020, at her home, and claimed to have thrown the body in a garbage container in the city of Hot Spring, California. They fled through Mexico and then returned to Brazil. The pair were arrested in Cariacica on February 22, 2020.

Los Angeles police, who investigated the case, pointed out that Thiago and Walderson killed the strangled young woman with a power cord. They then wrapped the body in a mat and placed the victim in the trunk of her car.

The Federal Police acted in the case, mainly in terms of international cooperation, through the Judicial-Criminal Assistance Agreement signed between Brazil and the United States, the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT), as well as the Civil Police of Espírito Santo, in the context of of prisons.
