Brazil: International outcry over the invasion of government buildings by Bolsonaro’s supporters

The US, EU, France and other countries condemned it invasion of Congress, the Supreme Court and other government buildings in Brazil by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro.

With the shocking images circulating around the world and while Brazil’s president, Lula, mobilized the national guard to restore order in the capital, countries and organizations rushed to condemn the incidents.

Condemnation by USA

US President Joe Biden called the violent incidents of Bolsonarian protesters in Brasilia, their invasion of the seats of the three powers, “extreme”.

“I condemn the attack on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil’s democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people must not be undermined. I look forward to continuing to work with President Lula,” he tweeted.

This is the first reaction of the Democratic president to the events in the Brazilian capital, which refer directly to those of January 6, 2021 in the federal Capitol in Washington.

“We condemn today’s attacks against the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court of Brazil. The use of force to attack democratic institutions is always unacceptable. We join our voices with @lulaoficial and call for an immediate end to these actions,” said US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken.

“Violence has no place in a democracy,” tweeted US High Commissioner to Brasilia Douglas Koneff. “We strongly condemn the attacks on the institutions of executive, legislative and judicial power in Brasilia, which is also an attack on democracy. There is no justification for such actions,” he added.

Condemnation by EU

European Council President Charles Michel also condemned the attack in a tweet. He declared his full support for the country’s democratically elected president

“I absolutely condemn the attack on Brazil’s democratic institutions. Full support to President @LulaOficial Da Silva, democratically elected by millions of Brazilians through fair and free elections,” Michel said.

Convict of France

“The will of the Brazilian people and democratic institutions must be respected! President @LulaOficial can count on France’s unconditional support,” said French President Emmanuel Macron.
