Brazil is among the 20 most generous countries in a global solidarity ranking

According to data from the World Giving Index 2022, Brazil is in 18th place in the ranking that measures the generosity of 119 countries.

In an interview with CNN Radio the CEO of the Institute for the Development of Social Investment Paula Fabiani highlighted that the result is “exceptional.”

“Being in the G20 of the most generous countries in the world is fabulous news. Last year we were in 54th position, it’s an important leap,” he said.

Worldwide, 3 billion people helped some stranger, an increase of approximately half a billion compared to the pre-pandemic period.

Around 200 million people also donated money to civil society organizations.

The survey asks participants if the person made a donation in the last month, volunteered or helped a stranger.

“The study highlights that 3 out of 4 Brazilians helped a stranger last year, which puts Brazil 11th in this regard,” said Paula.

She recalls that this is a reflection of what is observed today on the streets, with “an increase in homeless people, people going hungry, all of this has led to increased engagement.”

The CEO also says it is important to highlight that “in general, people from all social classes help, but what has been happening is a greater engagement of those who have more resources, from the wealthier classes.”

In the world, Indonesia leads the ranking for the fifth consecutive year, followed by Kenya and the United States.
