Health Minister Nísia Trindade said this Thursday (15) that Brazil is at level 1 of the mpox emergency. The speech took place during the installation of the Health Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response actions to the disease.
This means that there is no detection of the new variant of the virus, called 1B, in national territory.
With the potential to cause more severe clinical conditions, the new strain of mpox is more transmissible. The new variant has become a global concern after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus a global health emergency this week due to the outbreak in Africa.
The COE-Mpox will intensify disease surveillance and control actions in the national territory and will be responsible for monitoring the epidemiological situation of the virus, coordinating response actions, in addition to addressing guidance measures for travelers.
Symptoms of mpox include acute lesions with secretions, as well as vesicles in different areas of the body, but which are mainly concentrated in the genitals and sometimes in the mouth area. The infected person may experience chills and headaches.
The ministry also reported that it is negotiating with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for the emergency acquisition of 25,000 doses of vaccines against the disease. The target of the immunization will be people living with HIV/AIDS and laboratory professionals.
According to the minister, there are currently no cases of variant 1B in the country. Since the international emergency situation was declared in 2022, only cases of the disease with strain 2 have been recorded.
According to a technical report used by Trindade, infections are concentrated among men, with a percentage of 98%, and people carrying the HIV virus.
