Brazil is back on the world stage, says Frank Walter Steinmeier from Brasilia

Speaking from Brasilia for the inauguration of Brazil’s new president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Brazil is regaining its share as a key international player in both economic and climate matters.

“I am happy that Brazil is back on the world stage,” Steinmeier said today, hours before Lula was sworn in.

“We need Brazil,” the German president said when asked what interest Germany has in Lula’s success. “We need Brazilian political leadership that will play a role not only in economic cooperation, but also in protecting the global climate.”

Steinmeier said he was happy to see that Lula is willing to play that very role with Brazil, noting that he hopes international cooperation will not only come from Germany.

Germany is to start with an initial donation of 35 million euros to the Amazon Fund to protect the rainforest. Those funds had been frozen under the far-right government of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

“It’s important for all of us to preserve the green lungs of the earth, the Amazon rainforest,” Steinmeier said.
