Brazil was elected this Tuesday (10) and will occupy – from January – a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC). The name of the advisor still needs to be defined by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
“The significant vote received reflects the international community’s recognition of Brazil’s commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights at national and international levels, as well as its actions in defense of peace, sustainable development and democracy”, informed the note released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
At the time of the candidacy, the Minister of Human Rights, Silvio Almeida, said that the country will have the opportunity to be a global protagonist in the area.
According to the signed letter of commitments, Brazil committed to working to strengthen the Council’s role in preventing and tackling the structural causes of serious human rights violations, with an emphasis on constructive dialogue and international cooperation.
