Even in a year that already predicts turmoil for the economic, social and environmental situation around the world, Brazil is in first place in the ranking of countries that are most optimistic about 2023. This is what a survey carried out by the Ipsos institute points out. , disclosed to CNN this Friday (6).
The “Global Advisor – Predictions 2023” survey, carried out with 36 countries, indicates that 85% of Brazilians believe that the year that begins will be better than 2022 – an increase of 3 percentage points in relation to the survey carried out at the end of 2021. Brazil ties with Mexico in that regard.
“The optimism of Brazilians is a historical factor and has been improving consistently since the beginning of the 2nd half, and this has an impact on future perspectives”, explains Marcos Calliari, CEO of the Ipsos institute.
“Furthermore, a change in federal administration also almost always brings optimism – it’s historic. So, at this moment, Brazilians are imagining that the future will be better.”
Following are the populations of China, with 83%, and the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, tied with 82%. At the other end, Japan (36%), Belgium (44%) and France (44%) are among the least optimistic about 2023.
Brazil’s optimism goes against the grain of the rest of the world. According to Calliari, there are two factors that explain this difference in expectations. “The first is that Brazilian inflation was reduced over three consecutive months, including deflation. Expectations regarding price increases have been reduced, which is reflected in this survey,” he explains.
In the rest of the world, the opposite happened, as price increases were consistent over the last half of last year.
Another factor that explains the discordant confidence of Brazilians is the “unprecedented nature of the inflation phenomenon in some countries in North America, Europe and Asia, for generations that have never experienced these levels”.
“It is natural that with this scenario, concerns are relatively greater. In addition, we have an ongoing war on European soil, which causes pessimism in the rest of the world.”
The average between countries indicates that the world, in relation to 2021, has become more pessimistic: the percentage of those who say they expect a better year was 65%, compared to 77% in the previous survey. It is the lowest level in 10 years.

The Ipsos institute also consulted respondents on economic forecasts. Among Brazilians, 50% believe that the country’s inflation will be higher in 2023 than it was last year. Confidence puts Brazil in last place in the ranking.
At the other extreme, South Africa leads out of 36 countries, with 91% of respondents believing that the inflation rate will rise. Worldwide, the average is 75%.
Brazil remains in last place in the survey when it comes to unemployment: about 41% of the population believes that more Brazilians will become unemployed in the year that begins. South Africa also leads in this regard, with 88%, while the world average is 68%.
