Brazil is one of the countries that most tax health in the world, says president of Abimed

In an interview with CNN this Saturday (17), the president of the Brazilian Health Technology Industry Association (Abimed), Fernando Silveira, said that Brazil is one of the few countries that most tax the health area.

“Brazil is one of the countries that most tax the health area in the world. Several OECD countries have no tax impact on the healthcare sector, both in the field of medical devices and equipment as well as in the drug industry,” he said.

Silveira also commented on the document that will be delivered to candidates for the Presidency of the Republic and the government of São Paulo, with proposals that encourage the industrial development of the health sector.

According to him, any tax change that occurs within the health sector can affect the public’s accessibility to care. “Any tax movement within the health sector affects the population’s ability to access quality health care.”

In addition, for the president of Abimed, Brazil should move towards lower health rates, until it reaches the members of the OECD.

“It is important to remember that health and education are two areas that were nominally mentioned in the Constitution as a citizen’s right and a duty of the state. In this sense, we should move towards progressively lower rates, so that the sector and, as a population, are able to expand access to full and quality care in all spheres”, he said.
