Brazil: Judge orders suspension of Telegram

A judge of the Supreme Court of Brazil today ordered the blocking of the online, encrypted application of Telegram messages, because he does not cooperate with the authorities to fight against misinformation.

The Telegram repeatedly “did not comply with the court orders”, Judge Alexandre de Moraes said, ordering the “complete suspension” of the platform in Brazil.

This application has been downloaded to 53% of mobile phones operating in Brazil. It is mainly preferred by the supporters of the far-right president Zaich Bolsonaro.

Telegram is of Russian origin but is headquartered in Dubai. He was one of the key figures in Bolsonaro’s campaign strategy, seeking re-election in the October presidential election and advocating for unrestricted freedom of expression. Unlike other platforms, there is almost no control over the messages and the groups can have up to 200,000 members, which significantly increases the possibility of spreading false information.

“Our Telegram account provides daily information on actions (of national interest (of the government) which are unfortunately overlooked by many” media, “Bolsonaru wrote on Twitter this morning. The post was made before the court decision was announced.

Judge Moraes mainly referred to the Telegram refusal to block, at the request of the Brazilian judicial authorities, the account of Alan do Santos, a blogger and supporter of Bolsonaro, who is being investigated for spreading false news. The judge also said that the platform does not cooperate in cases involving child pornography.
