Brazil: Lula regains control of government buildings after Bolsonaro supporters invade

The Brazilian president Luis Inacio Lula da Silva he returned to Brasilia and went to check on her extent of damages to the presidential palace and then to the Supreme Court after the invasion of followers of the predecessor of Zach Bolsonarowhich also caused extensive damage to the buildings of the congressional bodies, captured footage broadcast by the Globo television network.

The center-left president, who took office just a week ago, earlier said in a speech in the state of Sao Paulo that his far-right predecessor had “encouraged” “fanatic fascist vandals” to storm the seats of the three branches of government — executive, legislative and judicial— in Brasilia.

Jair Bolsonaro condemns “looting and invasions of public buildings”

The former president of Brazil, Jáich Bolsonaro, commented on Twitter that “the looting and the invasion of public buildings (…) are against the rule” of “peaceful demonstrations”.

In another post, Bolsonaro, who is in the US, rejected “unproven accusations” by Lula’s centre-left successor, who alleged that the far-right former head of state’s “speech” had “encouraged” “fascist vandals” to storm the offices of the three powers.

Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party (Partido Liberal, PL) condemned her yesterday supporters of the far-right ex-president of Brazil storm government buildings in Brasilia.

Valdemar da Costa Neto judged that yesterday was “a sad day for the Brazilian nation”, as “the events in Brasilia (…) are a shame for all of us, they do not represent our party, they do not represent (former president) Bolsonaro”.

“We support the peaceful protests. Today’s (yesterday’s) actions are shameful.”

Brazil: Joe Biden condemns ‘attack on democracy’

The American president Joe Biden condemned yesterday Sunday “attack on democracy” in Brazil.

Biden said he would continue to work with centre-left President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who beat Mr Bolsonaro in the most lopsided election in a generation in October 2022.

“I condemn the attack on democracy and the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil’s democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people must not be undermined,” Biden said via Twitter.

Earlier, the American president characterized “outrageous” the situation in Brasilia, strongly reminiscent of two years ago on January 6, 2021, when supporters of Donald Trump raid on the federal Capitol in Washington.
