Brazil: More than 11,000 people evacuated due to floods in Bahia

More than 11,000 people have been forced to flee their homes and authorities have taken refuge in some 4,200 of them due to flooding in 19 municipalities in the state of Bahia. Brazil (northeast), the authorities announced.

The heavy rains in this state since the beginning of November and the floods have claimed the lives of 17 people, with the most recent death recorded on Thursday, according to the Civil Protection victims in Bahia.

In total, 66 municipalities are in a state of emergency due to floods, according to the same source.

The number of people who have been forced to leave their homes has reached 11,260 and that of the residents to whom the authorities need to offer housing 4,185, always according to the Civil Protection.

The federal government and the state in Bahia announced on Saturday that they are conducting an operation to rescue residents who have been stranded in flooded areas.

In Salvador, the state capital, the rainfall reached 250 millimeters the day before yesterday, the beginning of the month. This is five times the historical average for the whole month of December.
