Brazil must seek permanent powers in the UN Security Council, says diplomat

As of January 1, Brazil will once again occupy one of the rotating seats on the UN Security Council.

In this next period, the Brazilian government may reach a definitive participation in the body with veto powers.

“One of the hypotheses is the expansion of permanent members, which today are only five”, evaluated the former Brazilian ambassador to Washington Rubens Barbosa.

“Brazil, Japan, India and Germany are fighting to, in addition to voting, obtain the power of veto”, explains Barbosa.

The diplomat, however, believes that the challenge of gaining strength in the UN Security Council has become more difficult in recent years.

Rubens Barbosa considers that several international entities are experiencing a crisis of multilateralism and states that the powers do not want to give up power.

“Brazil is going to enter one of these temporary seats in the Council at a time when the UN is empty”, analyzes the diplomat.

“Especially during Donald Trump’s government, the United States imposed its policy and there was no possibility of the flow of other countries.”

Brazil will occupy the rotating seat on the United Nations Security Council until the end of 2023.

Despite being, together with Japan, the country that most temporarily worked in the group, Brazil did not perform this function for a decade.
