The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Wednesday that 2,641 patients with COVID-19 died in the previous 24 hours, while 79,219 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory.
According to official figures, Brazil, with a population of 212 million, has so far recorded 441,691 deaths out of a total of some 15.8 million infections.
It is the second most severe new coronavirus pandemic on the planet in absolute terms, behind only the US, and the third highest number of cases worldwide, behind the US and India.
Cuba: Over 1,300 cases and another 8 deaths in 24 hours
The Cuban Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that 1,339 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the past 24 hours, the second highest number on a daily basis since the outbreak of the new coronavirus on the island in March 2020, while another 8 patients with COVID-19 succumbed.
The death toll from a new coronavirus pandemic in the Caribbean has reached 834 dead so far out of a total of 128,094 infections, according to ministry figures.
The 1,255 of the cases were due to transmission to the community, clarified the chief epidemiologist of the ministry, Francisco Duran, emphasizing that “the current data is not good either”.

The Chilean Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that 4,778 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed in the laboratory in the past 24 hours, while 32 patients with COVID-19 had succumbed.
The death toll from the pandemic of the new coronavirus in the Latin American country reached 27,997 dead out of a total of 1,300,639 infections.
Cases have dropped in five of the country’s 16 regions over the past seven days, according to Health Minister Enrique Paris.
More than 7.2 million Chileans have received both doses of their COVID-19 vaccine.
Mexico: Another 104 deaths and 2,000 cases in 24 hours
The Mexican Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday that another 104 patients with COVID-19 had died in the past 24 hours, while 2,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory.
According to official figures, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million has reached this stage 220,850 deaths out of a total of 2,387,512 infections.
The government acknowledges, however, that the death toll is low. At the end of March, data on excess mortality indicated that deaths due to COVID-19 were 60% higher than recorded.
Ecuador: Over 1,400 cases and 88 deaths in 24 hours
The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Wednesday that 1,441 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, while 88 patients with COVID-19 succumbed.
The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the Andean country officially stands at 14,597 dead out of a total of 410,870 infections so far. But another 5,300 deaths are thought to have been caused by COVID-19, without this being confirmed by forensics, which puts the death toll at around 19,900. But experts say even this number is rather undervalued.
The province of Pitsinca, where the capital is located, remains at the center of the pandemic. There, 601 cases were confirmed, 534 in Quito.
The immunization campaign in Ecuador continues at a slow pace: 1.7 million doses of vaccine have been administered.
