The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced on Tuesday that 171 patients had died in the past 24 hours due to complications of COVID-19 and 8,430 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed.
Cases of the Omicron variant have reached 77 so far, according to the same source.
With 618,705 dead after the new coronavirus pandemic broke out in its territory, Latin America, the largest country with a population of 212 million, records the second heaviest death toll in the world in absolute terms, after the US. Infections reached 22,254,706; Brazil remains third in the world in terms of the number of cases, behind the US and India, at least according to official figures.
However, as the vaccination of the population finally progressed, the numbers of infections and deaths have dropped dramatically in recent months compared to spring.
