Brazil: Over 9,000 new coronavirus cases, 229 deaths in 24 hours

Her Ministry of Health Brazil announced on Saturday that 229 patients had died in the past 24 hours due to complications of COVID-19 and 9,233 cases of SARS-CoV-2 had been confirmed.

Laboratory-confirmed cases have now reached a total of 22,076,863; Brazil remains third in the world in terms of the number of reported viral infections, behind the US and India, according to official figures.

Yesterday, ANVISA, Brazil’s health watchdog, recommended on Saturday, after the Omicron variant was identified, that travel restrictions be extended to include Angola, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

A day earlier, the Brazilian government announced that it was closing its borders to travelers from South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.
