Brazil overtakes Russia and becomes the country with the 3rd highest number of women in prison

Brazil is the country with the third largest female incarcerated population in the world, according to a survey recently released by the World Female Imprisonment List.

With 42,694 women and girls imprisoned or sentenced, the country has surpassed Russia, which has 39,120 incarcerated. In second place is China, with 145 thousand; the United States leads the list of the largest female incarcerated population, with 211,375.

Despite occupying the third position in the ranking in 2022, the Brazilian female prison population had a reduction of 4.49% compared to the 2017 index. Of this year’s total, 62% are black women, according to the Ministry of Justice and Security. country public.

In the ranking of the countries that most incarcerated girls and women since the 2000s, Brazil leads in South America, having increased four times the number of Brazilian women imprisoned in the period. Colombia ranks second in the region, with 6,746 prisoners.

Meanwhile, the world recorded a 60% increase in the female prison population, reaching 740,000 women and girls, according to the survey, which is in its fifth edition.

The research was made from a collection carried out in 221 prisons around the world, including both those detained provisionally and those who were convicted and sentenced. The list of studies is compiled by Birkbeck College, UK, with the aim of presenting trends in female incarceration across countries, regions and continents.

In addition to Brazil, the number of women and girls in prison has increased particularly sharply in Cambodia, Indonesia, El Salvador and Guatemala. Also according to the survey data, they represent 6.9% of the global prison population.
