With an unprecedented energy crisis in Europe, Brazil stands as a major supplier to the bloc, which is struggling to reduce its dependence on Russian gas, amid threats of supply disruption, less than two months before the European winter.
The conclusion is from the CEO of 2W Energia, Claudio Ribeiro. “The world has been wondering to what extent countries can become so dependent on unstable countries for energy support, not only in relation to Russian gas, but also to countries in the Middle East,” he told CNN on Tuesday (4) .
In this scenario, Ribeiro highlights the natural characteristics of Brazil as an important factor in making energy generation cheaper here than in Europe.
“Brazil has an opportunity because of its characteristics. Natural resources, like sun and wind, in Europe are not like here. There you need to invest almost double or triple to get the same energy,” she says.
The warning made in a recent report by the International Energy Agency says that European countries will need to reduce energy consumption in winter by 13% to avoid a shortage. To face this situation, the EU has already filled its gas reserves above 80%. However, if Russia cuts supplies to the bloc, this reserve will need to rise to 90%, the agency calculates.
