The government of Brazil spoke on Wednesday (31) on the death of Mikhail Gorbachev, the last president of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). The statement highlights that he was an “important world leader of the late 20th century”.
“Upon receiving the first visit of a Brazilian president to Moscow, in 1988, former President Gorbachev contributed to the strengthening of bilateral relations”, the text emphasizes.
The federal administration also conveyed to the Russian government and the leader’s family “its sincerest condolences”.
Gorbachev died on Tuesday at the age of 91 after a long illness, according to Russian state news agencies.
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin expressed his deepest condolences on Tuesday for the death of former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Interfax news agency.
His government was known for political and economic reforms in the USSR, in particular “glasnost” (opening) and “perestroika” (restructuring).
