Since August 2010, Brazil has registered a migratory flow of 2.3 million of people. Of these, 146,109 people were recognized as refugees according to data from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP), through the National Secretariat of Justice (Senajus), released this Thursday (10).
The number of recognitions is one third of the total number of requests made — until August this year, there were 450,752 requests for recognition of refugee status received by the country.
Around 1.7 million permanent, temporary and border residents were also registered during this period. The largest migratory flow is of migrants coming from:
- Venezuela (500,636)
- Haiti (183,102)
- Bolivia (110,795)
Among the recognized refugees those who were forced for some reason to leave their country of origin, whether for religious, political reasons or human rights violations, are, for the most part, from the
- Venezuela (134,089)
- Syria (4,100)
- Democratic Republic of the Congo (1,158)
The main nationalities of asylum seekers are Venezuelan (257,186), Cuban (41,800) and Haitian (40,483).
The decision to provide refuge is made by the National Committee for Refugees (Conare), based on Law No. 9,474/1997.
In 2023, there were 4.9 million people, mainly in the United States, Portugal, Paraguay, the United Kingdom and Japan.
