Brazil reached, this Tuesday (28), the mark of 80% of the target audience with two doses of vaccine against Covid-19. In all, 177 million Brazilians over 12 years of age can be immunized against the coronavirus, of which more than 143 million completed the vaccination cycle.
Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, the country has applied 320 million doses of the vaccine, of which 161 million were used for the first application.
“Brazil managed, through a diversified strategy in the acquisition of vaccines, to have a sufficient number of doses to go ahead with a booster dose for the adult population”, said the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga.
The booster dose is also being applied in states and municipalities, and so far 16 million Brazilians have received the third dose. The booster dose should be given four months after the primary vaccination course has been completed. Currently, all people over 18 years old can receive the booster vaccine.
The National Immunization Program (PNI) will still have a fourth dose against Covid-19. According to a technical note released by the Ministry of Health, all immunosuppressed people over 18 will receive the fourth application. The booster should take place four months after the last dose of the vaccine schedule (two doses + additional dose).
Vaccination against the coronavirus of children between 5 and 11 years old was authorized by Anvisa, however, the matter is still the target of an impasse. Last Monday (27), President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) stated that his 11-year-old daughter will not be vaccinated.
Despite the president’s position and the consultation made by the Ministry of Health, the folder has already recommended the vaccination of children from 5 to 11 years old, provided that with parental permission and the presentation of a prescription. The medical request requirement is criticized by experts and contested by state governments.
