Brazil received the first batch of updated vaccines against the Covid-19 variant this Thursday (2). The 12.5 million doses, from Moderna and Pfizer, were acquired by the Ministry of Health after approval from the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), in December 2023.
The batch of vaccines arrived at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, this Thursday morning, around 7:20 am.
The National Institute for Health Quality Control (INCQS) must inspect the products and make them available to all regions of the country following the National Immunization Plan.
“Vaccination against Covid-19 is still important, even with the reduction in the number of serious cases. People aged 60 or over, people living in long-term care institutions, immunocompromised people, indigenous people and riverside residents are the priority groups to receive the updated vaccine”, said Nísia Trindade, Minister of Health.
The Ministry reinforced the importance of vaccination, especially in children aged six months to under five years, who must be vaccinated against Covid-19. The vaccination schedule for this group is three doses, with intervals of four and eight weeks between the first and second, and between the second and third doses, respectively.
In addition to vaccination, the Ministry of Health also offers the antiviral drug nirmatrelvir/ritonavir for the treatment of Covid-19 in people over 65 years of age and immunosuppressed patients over 18 years of age.
