Brazil receives “seed” to be able to produce monkeypox vaccine

The researchers at the Federal University of Minas Gerais received material to start studies on a national vaccine against monkeypox.

In an interview with CNN Radio the researcher at the Technological Center for Vaccines at UFMG, Flávio da Fonseca stated that this material is called “seed.”

“It’s a small amount of weakened live virus, from the same vaccine from the 60s and 80s that we used to eradicate smallpox,” he said.

The researcher points out that the Ministry of Health anticipated and bought doses of the immunizer already approved against monkeypox.

“But we want to acquire this production capacity if necessary, it is possible that it will not be, but with health you don’t play”, he added.

Flávio da Fonseca assesses that the situation of monkeypox “is apparently in decline”: “The number of cases has decreased not only in Brazil, but in the United States and Europe.”

Even so, he cautions: “It is important to continue monitoring to see if this decline will be sustained.”

Likewise, the specialist reinforces the need for the population to be attentive to symptoms and seek medical attention for an accurate diagnosis.
