Data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) reveal that 278,299 forest fires were recorded in Brazil in 2024.
The number represents an increase of 46.5% compared to the previous year, when 189,901 occurrences were recorded. Before 2024, the highest number recorded by Inpe had been in 2010: 319,383 cases.
Since the beginning of the historical series of Inpe records, in 1998, the year with the most occurrences of fires was 2007: 393,915.
When dividing by biomes, most fires occurred in the Amazon (140,346). Next are Cerrado (81,468), Atlantic Forest (21,328), Caatinga (20,235) and Pampa (424)
THE CNN contacted the Ministry of the Environment to comment on the data and is awaiting a position.
