Brazil records lowest number of bank robberies in six years

In 2021, Brazil recorded the lowest number of bank robberies in the last six years. According to data from the National Public Security Information System (Sinesp), of the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, 388 financial institutions were robbed last year.

The number represents a drop of 69% compared to 2015, the first year of the historical series of compilation of these data.

“This is the result of the Brazilian government’s strong investment in personnel and finances and the integration of security forces in all states to combat this type of action”, says Minister of the Ministry, Anderson Torres.

The data includes the actions of the “Novo Cangaço” — when gangs try to surround and dominate cities to extract values from bank branches and/or values.

The last occurrence of this type was recorded in April, when a group of at least 30 heavily armed people invaded the city of Guarapuava, in the interior of Paraná, and tried to rob a valuables carrier.
