Brazil records more than 9,000 cases of gastroenteritis in the 1st quarter of 2022

In the first two months of this year 2022, Brazil recorded more than nine thousand cases of gastroenteritis — it affects the stomach and intestines. Of the 9,729 cases, 1,024 infections were recorded in São Paulo.

The disease is caused by the norovirus. Transmission occurs after contact with an infected person, through droplets of saliva, contaminated food or water.

The clinical picture is characterized by a decrease in stool consistency and an increase in the number of bowel movements.

Rodrigo Barbosa, digestive system surgeon, told CNN that this type of disease usually resolves spontaneously and is accompanied by abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, its symptoms persist between one and three days.

“In case of persistence, the case may not be viral, but another disease, such as a bacterial infection that requires the use of antibiotics based on medical advice”, he said.

Prevention can happen with simple acts such as hand hygiene and washing food well.

As inflammation is related to increased bowel movements, experts recommend that the patient hydrate and, in case of worsening, seek medical attention.
