Brazil records record number of people who changed name and sex in notary

Since the decision of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in June 2018, which recognized the right of transgenders and transsexuals to adapt their perceived identity to the real identity in their identification documents, it is the first time that Brazil registers the highest number of people who changed their name and sex at the Civil Registry Office.

In the first six months of 2022, there were 1,124 changes, 43.7% more than last year with 782 records. In the state of São Paulo alone, the 1st half of the year was the second with the most name and sex changes since 2018. The number is 23.5% higher than that recorded in 2021.

The new legislation makes it possible to carry out the process of changing gender in the name at the Civil Registry Offices with the need to present all personal documents, proof of address and the certificates of civil, criminal, state and federal distributors of the place of residence of the last five years, as well as state and federal criminal enforcement certificates, from the Protest and Labor Courts.

Regulated by Provision nº 73 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), the decision provides for the possibility of changing name and gender without the need for sex change surgery and judicial authorization, just go to the Civil Registry Offices across the country.
