Brazil rises 5 positions in the UN Human Development Ranking

THE Brazil climbed five positions and now occupies the 84th place among 193 countries and territories in the ranking of Human Development Index (HDI) prepared by United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) released on Tuesday (6). Brazil’s HDI recorded in 2023 was 0.760.

The full title of the report is “The Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of Ai” (A question of choice: people and possibilities in the Age of AI). The study brings an in -depth analysis of the intersection between human development and Artificial Intelligence (AI) .

In essence, the report offers a perspective on how the rise of artificial intelligence represents a crucial moment for human development requiring conscious choices on how this technology is developed and integrated into society to ensure that it benefits everyone and promotes human flowering.

2023 data

The current report data refer to 2023. In the previous document, which analyzed the 2022 data, the Brazilian HDI was 0.778. In 2023, the Brazilian index was 0.786.

The HDI, which varies from 0 to 1, is a compound index calculated based on three basic dimensions of human development: a long and healthy life, measured by life expectancy at birth; Knowledge, measured by the expected years and average years of schooling; and a standard of living, measured by per capita gross national income.

In the organization’s classification, the Brazil is considered a country of high human development group that encompasses countries with HDI between 0.700 and 0.799.

Despite the growth of 0.008 point in the value of HDI between 2022 (0.778) and 2023 (0.786), growth shows fall in recent decades. The average annual growth of Brazil’s HDI was 0.91% between 1990 and 2000, 0.71% between 2000 and 2010 and 0.42% between 2010 and 2023.

Overall ranking

The country with the best classification in 2023 was Iceland, with a HDI of 0.972. Second place is shared by Norway (0.970) and Switzerland (0.970). Following are Denmark in 4th place (0.962), and Germany (0.959) and Sweden (0.959) tied in 5th place.

Considering the nations of South America listed with rankings of the report, Brazil occupies the 4th position. The country is behind Uruguay (48th place, 0.815), Peru (79th place, 0.794) and Colombia (83rd place, 0.788). On the other hand, Brazil is in front of Venezuela (121st place, 0.709), for example, among the South American countries present on the ranking list.
