In an interview with CNN Unifesp International Relations professor Regiane Bressan stated that Brazil should ask Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to adopt a softer stance towards the political opposition in his country.
The expert assesses that the Brazilian government seeks to maintain a delicate balance between dialogue and criticism of the political situation in Venezuela.
According to Bressan, since the presidential election in the country, Brazilian diplomacy has been closely following events in Venezuela, adopting a stance that she considers “quite correct” in trying to maintain dialogue and ask Maduro for clarification.
However, in light of the Venezuelan government’s recent offensives, Brazil has been hardening its position.
Defending the population and maintaining dialogue
The professor highlights that Brazil will probably assume a role of defending the Venezuelan population, aligning itself with the international community’s consensus in asking Maduro to be less severe with the opposition.
“The political persecution of this opposition continues,” highlights Bressan.
Despite the growing tension, the expert believes that President Lula (PT) does not want to completely break off dialogue with Maduro. The objective would be to maintain some capacity for negotiation and influence over the Venezuelan situation.
However, Bressan predicts that “Brazil must toughen up as Nicolás Maduro isolates Venezuela.”
Caution and preparation for future challenges
The professor emphasizes that Brazil is acting cautiously, studying the situation day by day.
She argues that severing ties with Venezuela would not help solve the problems, especially considering the shared border between the two countries.
Bressan also draws attention to the ongoing challenge of Venezuelan immigration to Brazil.
“We will continue, for example, receiving Venezuelan immigrants in our country, which is also a delicate situation, as we have to prepare for this,” concludes the specialist.
