The Minister of Mines and Energy, Bento Albuquerque, stated that Brazil should have 50% of its energy matrix clean by 2030 – an evolution of the current 48%, classified by the minister as “already impressive”.
The statement was made during a participation by the minister in the panel of the Sugarcane Industry Union (Unica) and Raízen at COP26, in Glasgow, United Kingdom, this Wednesday (3).
Albuquerque did not specifically mention what the strategies would be to reach the goal, but highlighted the role of biofuels in the transport sector.
“Biofuels, in particular ethanol and biogas, whose main source is also sugarcane, have played and will play an even more significant role in the decarbonization efforts of the transport sector,” he declared.
“Sugarcane products currently account for 19% of the Brazilian energy matrix, with the participation of ethanol, bagasse, bioelectricity and biogas”, he added.
For the minister, the discussions at COP26 are more “mature” in relation to COP25, which took place in 2019 in Madrid, Spain. “The world had the opportunity to reflect on these two years and organize itself better, even with the pandemic, for this event of importance to the world.”
After the start of COP26, Brazil updated its climate ambition to a 50% cut in gas emissions compared to 2005 in 2030. The country was also a signatory, together with other nations, of agreements involving the end of illegal deforestation by 2030 and a 30% reduction in methane emissions by the end of this decade.
Albuquerque further argued that each country needs to seek “its natural resources and its competitive advantages” in order to achieve decarbonization goals.
“I have said that each country, each region has to consider its natural resources, its competitive advantages and make fruits of them so that it can reach its decarbonization goals, especially in this energy transition process, where there is no single technology, not one only way out”, he stated.
Albuquerque is one of the ministers who make up the federal government’s delegation at COP26. On Wednesday, the minister has on the agenda a meeting with the executive director of the International Energy Agency, Dr. Fatih Birol, and meetings with “green” shareholders.
