The Brazilian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday that another 2,371 patients with COVID-19 died in the past 24 hours, while 49,768 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed.

The pandemic of the new coronavirus in the Latin American country of 212 million people has reached 459,045 deaths out of a total of 16.3 million infections, according to official data, which are characterized by underestimated by experts, while epidemiologists express fears the country is threatened by a third wave as winter approaches in the southern hemisphere.

Mexico: 411 deaths and over 3,000 cases in 24 hours

The Mexican Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday that another 411 patients with COVID-19 died in the past 24 hours, while another 3,006 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the laboratory.

Officially, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in the country of 126 million has reached this stage with 223,072 deaths out of a total of 2,408,778 infections.

But the Mexican government acknowledges that the death toll – the fourth heaviest in the world, after the United States (593,288), Brazil (459,045) and India (318,895) – is underestimated. Data on over-mortality released by the Ministry of Health in March showed that COVID-19 deaths were at least 60% higher than those recorded by the health system.

Chile: 119 deaths and almost 8,700 cases in 24 hours

The Chilean Ministry of Health announced on Friday that another 119 COVID-19 patients had died in the past 24 hours and 8,680 SARS-CoV-2 cases had been confirmed in the laboratory.

The death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Latin America has so far reached 28,928 deaths out of a total of 1,361,381 infections.

This is the second consecutive day that the number of cases exceeded the level of eight thousand and the second highest number of cases recorded since the outbreak of the Chilean pandemic in March 2020.

The selected active cases are 43,793. The number of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU) is 3,067, of which 2,540 are intubated.

The Minister of Health expressed concern about the increase in cases. The Latin American country has recently seen an outbreak of the epidemic and the admission of younger people who have not been vaccinated in hospitals, even though it has already exceeded 50% of the target population as part of the national immunization campaign.

Vaccination of citizens under 30 began earlier this week.

The Ministry of Health aims to immunize 15.2 million Chileans by June 30, or about 80% of the population between the ages of 18 and 29.

The Ecuadorian Ministry of Health announced yesterday Friday that 836 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed in the previous 24 hours, while another 44 patients with COVID-19 died.

Officially, the death toll from the new coronavirus pandemic in Latin America has reached 14,953 deaths out of a total of 423,165 infections so far. But another 5,455 deaths are thought to have been due to COVID-19 without this being confirmed by forensics, which means the death toll is closer to 20,500. Experts have pointed out that they also consider this last number to be undervalued.

According to the ministry, 60.1% of those infected in Ecuador are between 20 and 49 years old and most are men.

The immunization campaign in Ecuador is unfolding slowly: about 2 million doses of vaccine have been given so far, mainly to groups of the population that were judged to be a priority. The government of Conservative President Guillermo Lasso, who took power this week, is expected to announce a new immunization program on May 31st, targeting 9 million people vaccinated in the first 100 days of its term.
