Brazil walks slowly to adopt inclusive education, says expert

“The inclusion paradigm is a model to be pursued by schools, educational sectors and society”, according to UFSCAR psychology professor João do Carmo.

Brazil has about 46.5 million people with some type of disability, according to IBGE data.

A CNN Radio he stated that inclusion “means a change in attitude, belief, perceptions and adaptation of the environment to accommodate students who present differences in terms of development and learning.”

The expert points out that the struggle for inclusive education is “long-standing”, and that it involves training and training teachers and everyone involved in the school.

“It is also important to provide for the reception of families”, he added.

According to João do Carmo, “we need to go a long way, clarify and make the population aware of what inclusion is, which has been happening in slow steps.”

The teacher sees that from north to south of Brazil, although the realities are different, the difficulties are the same, from lack of preparation of professionals and even from adequacy of structures.

“The environment that needs to suit the students. Imagine a child or teenager using a wheelchair, who may face difficulties with the school’s architecture, without a proper ramp, for example”, she concluded.
