Brazil wants to reinforce with Germany speech about change in the UN Security Council

Brazil must reinforce with Germany the need for changes in the UN Security Council (United Nations).

The expectation of government advisors is that the matter will be discussed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in December.

After participating in COP 28 in the United Arab Emirates, in November, the PT member is expected to land in Germany for an official visit.

Like Brazil, Germany is also asking for a permanent seat in the group, currently made up of the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom and France.

Lula’s visit to Germany would respond to an invitation from Scholz, who wants to resume the mechanism of intergovernmental consultations, a bilateral exchange between the two countries. The last meeting was in 2015.

With the absence of a consensus on the war between Israel and Hamas, the Security Council has been criticized for the current veto rules on resolutions.

At the last meeting, the resolution made by Brazil, currently in rotating command of the world body, was vetoed by the United States.
