Economy Minister Paulo Guedes said that Brazil will nominate its own candidate for the presidency of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The IDB opened the candidacy process for the presidency of the institution at the end of September this year, and the names can be proposed for the next 45 days.
In a press interview late this Friday afternoon (14), in Washington, Minister Paulo Guedes stated that he already knows who the candidate will be, but did not provide his name. Guedes said that in an informal conversation with the US Treasury Secretary, Janet Yellen, he informed who would be the candidate, and that the secretary pleased the secretary.
In addition to Yellen, Guedes had meetings today with the Minister of Economy of Colombia, and pointed out that he also probed the country about possible support for the name indicated by Brazil. Guedes highlighted that he is suggesting a name that is known in Washington and outside the political framework, due to the polarization in Brazil.
Also at the meeting with Colombia, the minister stated that the neighboring country asked Brazil for guidance on new technologies from the Central Bank, such as Pix and Open Banking. Guedes stated that the Brazilian BC will contact the Central Bank of Colombia.
Paulo Guedes was also asked if he would continue in office in the event of a victory for President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the second round of the elections. The minister stated that he has not yet been invited, but that they are “an alliance of liberals and conservatives, so the game follows the way we have it”.
