After 105 years of existence, the Brazilian Academy of Sciences is under female leadership. The biologist and biomedical scientist from São Paulo, Helena Nader, took office, this Wednesday (4), as president of ABC during a ceremony at the Museum of Tomorrow, in the central region of Rio de Janeiro.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Paulo Alvim, participated in the ceremony at the Museum of Tomorrow and said that the inauguration of Professor Helena Nader served as an inspiration.
“Ownership is strategic for society’s perception of the contribution that women can make in education, science and technology,” said Alvim. And he added: “Women are already the majority in university fields, in research, and it is also important that they play a leading role in the role of science. So I think it’s inspiring and something we have a lot to celebrate.”
At 70 years old, Helena Nader said that having a president at the Brazilian Academy of Sciences is a victory for Brazilian women. “
I see it as an important moment for girls to look at it and say they want to be scientists too. Brazil believes in science and the Brazilian people are very intelligent. I got here thanks to a lot of effort, but also a lot of perseverance and resilience”, declared Nader.
And he left a message: “Girls, women, there’s nothing you can’t do, don’t take no for an answer and together we’re going to change Brazil! I think we need all genders to have the country we want”.
Vice-president of ABC since 2019, the biomedical at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) assumes the position for the triennium 2022-2025 and succeeds physicist Luiz Davidovich.
