Brazilian average income drops 1.1% in the quarter through January; annual drop reaches 9.7%

Data from the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (Continuous Pnad) for the quarter ended in January indicate that the average income of the population fell by 1.1% compared to the previous quarter, ended in October, from R$2,518 to R$2,489. The disclosure was made by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this Friday (18).

In the annual comparison – with the quarter encompassing November and December 2020 and January 2021 – the drop was even greater, at 9.7%. In that period, the average income was R$ 2,755.

“Although there is an expansion of occupation and more people working, this is not being reversed in the growth of the income of workers in general”, says the coordinator of work and income of the IBGE, Adriana Beringuy.

The specialist also points out that the decline in income, which is usually associated with informal workers, was disseminated to other forms of insertion and not only those related to informality.

None of the sectors of the economy analyzed had a rise in income of the employees. At industrythe fall was 4.1%, around R$ 102, and occurred even with the increase in formal jobs.

The area of ​​public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services had a decrease of 2.1% in average income, around R$ 76. The segment of domestic services had a decrease in average income of 3.1%. , about R$30.

Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles fell by 6%, around R$130, while information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities fell by 7.5%, around R$288.

According to data from Pnad Contínua, the average income of the population started a downward trend from September 2020 (then at R$ 2,876), the same month in which the federal government halved the value of emergency aid created during the pandemic. In addition to the loss of value, the economic crisis scenario, with lower activity and high inflation, affects the population’s income.

The IBGE announced this morning that the unemployment rate in Brazil was 11.2% in the quarter ended in January. The number is the lowest for the period since 2016, and is 0.9 percentage point below the rate recorded in the previous quarter, which ended in October.
