In a scenario marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, inflation and unemployment, Brazilian households recorded a drop in net wages in 2021. The average was R$ 1,149, 8.3% lower than the previous year, according to the DomesticView survey. , published by the consultancy Kantar.
The same movement happened with income from government aid, especially Emergency Aid, which fell from R$ 204 to R$ 190, in the comparison between 2020 and 2021.
The Kantar survey also shows that, with the budget falling, the country experienced an increase in informal work in all regions. And in the homes of these informal workers, food, public services and housing have committed more than 70% of income.
How did Brazilians organize the budget in 2021?
In-home food accounted for 35% of household spending last year, followed by housing (24%) and utilities (13%). In terms of food, Brazilians have exchanged the traditional rice and beans, in addition to other commodities, for industrialized, more practical and faster products.
Rent spending has started to grow again, after a drastic drop during the first year of the pandemic. The senior manager of New Businesses at Kantar, Renato de Melo, highlighted that people also returned to renovate their homes.
“In some categories, we even saw a shortage of raw materials, such as residential painting. In this more hybrid model of life, people are investing in a more functional environment,” she added.
In relation to public services, electricity and gas took a good part of the domestic budget. The impact of the gas cylinder for classes D and E came to represent 25% of the costs with this category, while the average for the population was 17%.
The survey also points out that resources for animals increased by 129% in 2021. According to Melo, animal adoptions during the pandemic may have contributed to this result.
“We have more homes with pets. Homes that already had pets now have more. Those who didn’t have a dog or cat now have one. But the category lowered the average ticket. They are buying feed, but not super premium”, pointed out the manager.
