Brazilian capybara escapes from zoo in England; teams search for the animal

This Friday (20) marks a week of searching for the capybara known as Cinnamon, which escaped from Telford Zoo in England on the 13th. The Brazilian animal escaped from its shelter and crossed woods inside the zoo before disappearing into a forest in the region. Before, it was seen heading towards a nearby road.

After days of searching, the zoo managed to locate the animal through images from a thermal drone in a forest less than 200 meters from the zoo.

The team quickly moved to try to recapture the animal, but as they approached the capybara, it ran deeper into the undergrowth. To prevent any injury to the animal, the zoo installed cages with automatic doors that entice Canela to feed.

The zoo said in a statement on social media that it suspended searches on Thursday (19), but that they resumed on Friday (20).

“We have had extensive discussions with wildlife professionals and we are all concerned that continued disturbance of Cinnamon’s habitat could result in her moving into an area that could be dangerous.”

At Telford Zoo, the Brazilian capybara lived with her parents and brother. The institution says she had a great relationship with her caretakers.

The zoo also warned local residents to notify authorities if they encountered the animal. In a statement on social media, they said that the capybara is a docile animal, but it is not recommended to approach it as it becomes unpredictable when cornered.
