Brazilian chancellor meets with head of Russian diplomacy

Ambassador Carlos França, Minister of Foreign Affairs, meets behind closed doors this Wednesday (21) with Sergey Lavrov, head of Russian diplomacy, in New York. The meeting takes place in the context of the UN General Assembly. The commitment is on the ambassador’s agenda and was confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

According to the Itamaraty, the agenda for the meeting with the Russian counterpart is the trade relationship between the two countries, with special emphasis on products such as fertilizers, agricultural inputs and fuels. Ministry sources say that sensitive issues and negative agendas can be left out of the conversation.

Also on Wednesday, in an unprecedented televised address to the nation, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an additional mobilization of 300,000 reservists for combat in Ukraine.

“If the territorial integrity of our motherland is threatened, we will use all resources at our disposal to defend Russia and our people. This is not a bluff. (…) Those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons need to understand that the winds can turn in their direction”, said the Russian leader.

The statements generated heated responses from other major global powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan.

The repercussion of Putin’s announcement should be left for Thursday (22), at a UN Security Council meeting scheduled to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. Brazil has a non-permanent seat on the Council during the 2022-2023 biennium and is expected to speak during the session.

Brazil’s recent record on the matter includes declarations of neutrality and a negotiated end to hostilities.

Support for the Brazilian candidate to the ICJ

Brazilian diplomats seek support for their candidate for the International Court of Justice, Professor Leonardo Nemer Caldeira Brant. Only this Wednesday, Carlos França has bilateral meetings with ministers from six countries.

Brant boiler support should be an additional topic in all of them.

The vacancy available at the CIJ stems from the death of Judge Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade, a recognized Brazilian jurist who participated in the Court between 2009 and 2022.
