A 26-year-old Brazilian man died after being hit by a police vehicle, last Thursday (12), in London. Cristopher Guedes was riding a motorcycle and making a turn when he was surprised by the police car that was coming in the opposite direction.
According to Wanderson Alves, a friend of Christopher who was at the scene, the young man was hit shortly after the traffic lights changed. The vehicle was traveling at high speed and ran a red light when it hit him.
In contact with CNN Thaisa Guedes, the victim’s sister, said that the police provided assistance and the ambulance took around 40 minutes to arrive.
Christopher was taken to a hospital almost an hour away from the scene of the collision, but he succumbed to his injuries.
The young man moved to London in August this year and had been studying there for over a month. He was living in the city with his wife and had contact with other acquaintances who were childhood friends, in addition to his sister-in-law.
Last Friday (13), a motorcycle rally took place to ask for a position from both the Brazilian government and the British government, said Thaisa. At the time of the demonstration, neither the government nor the police had commented on the matter.
The Brazilian consulate in London contacted the victim’s friends on Saturday (14), said Wanderson. “We didn’t even know where his body had been taken after his death. They are leaving us completely blind. Totally helpless, not knowing what to turn to,” he declared.
According to the friend, the only information confirmed so far is that the incident will be investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOCP), a body that investigates accidents involving the police.
Family and friends have not yet had access to Cristopher’s belongings, such as documents and cell phone. The victim’s sister created an online “Vakinha” to raise funds for the transfer of the body. It is possible to contribute in this link.
The Consulate General of Brazil in London reported that it received news of the death of the Brazilian citizen and that it has maintained contact with his family and local authorities to provide the necessary assistance.
CNN contacted local police, but has not received any response so far.
