Brazilian diplomacy divides attention between the war in Israel and elections in Argentina

Brazilian diplomacy will have to deal with different tasks considered crucial to the government’s interests in the coming days. Some of the international representatives of the Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva administration are fully dedicated to the negotiations involving the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Another group, in recent days, has dedicated itself exclusively to information related to the elections in Argentina, the first round of which will take place next Sunday (22).

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, will represent Brazil at the meeting organized by Egypt to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip. The meeting is scheduled for Saturday (21).

On the other hand, an advisor from the International Affairs Office of the Presidency of the Republic was sent by Celso Amorim, head of the advisory, to update the government on the election in the neighboring country.

Regarding the conflict, interlocutors claim that Lula has demanded a solution from Brazilian diplomacy for the withdrawal of Brazilians who are in Gaza, Palestine. Furthermore, the president asked the country, which heads the UN Security Council this October, to move forward with a proposed agreement that would allow supplies to arrive in Palestinian territory.

Regarding the elections in Argentina, the government is concerned about the possibility of victory for Javier Milei, the opposition candidate to the current government. In recent months, Lula has shown more sympathy for Sergio Massa, a Peronist candidate who has the support of the current Argentine president, Alberto Fernandez.

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, admitted that a possible victory for Milei in the Argentine elections worries the Brazilian government, since the country is, in addition to being a neighbor, one of Brazil’s main trading partners.

“It’s natural that I’m [preocupado]. A person whose flag is to break with Brazil, a relationship built over centuries, is worrying. That’s natural. It would worry anyone. Because, in general, in international relations you don’t ideologize the relationship,” Haddad said in an interview with Reuters.

Speaking to CNN, assistants at Palácio do Planalto indicated that Lula should hold some meetings over the weekend, to discuss the two issues involving Brazilian international politics.
