Brazilian elections break record for mentions in international media

The week of September 19 to 25 saw the highest number of mentions of the Brazilian presidential election by news outlets in the last 100 days worldwide. The number is from the Nexis Newdesk platform, which monitors media coverage of the national election.

There were almost 2,000 publications on the Brazilian elections among the 80,000 news sources monitored worldwide, including those in the country itself, and in several languages. There was a 38.1% increase in the number of articles in the last week compared to the previous week.

“The panel was designed with the aim of giving visibility to the topic and showing the results of monitoring specific terms, so it is natural that, as the first round approaches, the tool will bring this evolution of numbers”, says Juliana Coneglian, coordinator of Nexis Newdesk marketing.

Of this total, 51.9% of the reports and columns were in Portuguese. Publications in English account for 25%, while articles in Spanish represent 21.1%. Texts in French account for 1.8% of publications on Brazilian elections worldwide.

The United States is the foreign country that publishes the most news about the Brazilian presidential election: there were more than 3,700 articles since the beginning of the electoral campaign until last Sunday (25). Argentina follows, with Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom closing the five countries with the greatest coverage.

One difference highlighted by the survey was the fact that Canada occupies the 9th place on the list, surpassing neighboring South American countries such as Chile and Colombia, which could have more interest in the Brazilian elections.

Among the main themes of the publications, both national and international address similar themes. Columns and analyzes of the most recent polls of voting intention are prioritized.

During the past week, the US embassy’s declaration in Brazil that the elections should have their results recognized by whoever wins the election to the Planalto Palace also made headlines.

Some of the publications in Spanish, on the other hand, focus on how the result will affect neighboring countries in Latin America in the face of very different economic programs.
